English Paper Piecing: Making a Lucy Boston Quilt with Bundle #6

It's time for the sixth bundle in our Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses Sew Along!

Want to make your own? You can order your fabric bundle HERE.

Every month, we release a new set of 4 English Paper Piecing Lucy Boston Block Bundles along with directions for you to re-create Melinda's blocks.

So, remember that we are using this honeycomb pattern to create each block. The focus placement photos below will reference the honeycomb color for each finished block. Also, for each block we'll be working from the inside out.

Let's jump right in!

 #6 BLOCK 1: PINK
When I sewed them together I discover I wasn't so precise when placing my papers which led to a single white dot in the midst of blue. It bothered me enough that I took out my Micron pen and colored it in. Dot gone and won't wash out!

#6 BLOCK 1:  GREEN

#6 BLOCK 1:  ORANGE

#6 BLOCK 1:  PURPLE

Anchor is centering the flower in the point

 #6 BLOCK 3:  GREEN

#6 BLOCK 3:  ORANGE
Anchors are the edge of capsule dots. Cut 4 going one direction (top) and 4 the other (bottom)

#6 BLOCK 3:  PURPLE

I love the absence in the center as an option. Imagine I'll have it free-motion quilted and I love the idea of a quilted motif highlighted there.

#6 BLOCK 4: PINK

#6 BLOCK 4:  ORANGE

#6 BLOCK 4:  PURPLE
Now for the oops...
While I usually use scissors to cut out honeycombs, sometimes I get cocky and use a 28mm rotary cutter. In this case, I was cutting my final motif only to discover another (already cut) motif had been underneath and became beyond saving. Well, that motif no longer existed in my swiss-cheesed fabric. So what to do when you have 7 out of 8 matching?

In this case, I chose to find another large, upturned flower. When looked at as a whole, having that flower allows for symmetry, while using a leaf or small flower as the focus of the motif draws attention to something being off. Even side by side, I think it looks just right.

I'll see you next month with Bundle #7!

Happy stitching,

Melinda
