English Paper Piecing: Making a Lucy Boston Quilt with Bundle #5

It's time for a new bundle in our Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses Sew Along!

This month we're exploring Bundle #5. You can order your fabric bundle HERE. The bundles will be available in the shop or online on Monday, August 31st, 2026.

With this bundle, we'll be learning how to create a mirror effect with our blocks and also how to match patterns across blocks. In the earlier posts in our Lucy Boston series, we covered how to use the templates and the basics of fussy cutting. You can also watch all of our Lucy Boston and paper piecing videos on our YouTube Channel

Let's check out this month's fabrics selection.

For your reference, we are using the honeycomb pattern below to create each block. The focus placement photos below will reference the honeycomb color for each finished block. Also, for each block we'll be working from the inside out.

#5 BLOCK 1: PINK

 #5 BLOCK 1:  GREEN

#5 BLOCK 1:  ORANGE

#5 BLOCK 1:  PURPLE
The anchor for this block is where the two blues meet.

#5 BLOCK 2: PINK
I again used where the two blues met as my anchor.

 #5 BLOCK 2:  GREEN
This fabric is from Fabric Bundle #3. If you don't have any of this particular fabric, try playing around with some of the other blue fabrics in this bundle or visit us at the shop for more ideas!

Apologies for the strange-looking photo of the fabric. I tried to disguise areas where I had already cut out sections for a different block. 😁

#5 BLOCK 2:  ORANGE
Now for the mirror image. They are just across from one another in the fabric

#5 BLOCK 2:  PURPLE

#5 BLOCK 3: PINK

 #5 BLOCK 3:  GREEN
Two blues centered at point.

#5 BLOCK 3:  ORANGE
White lines going through corners and red flower tip at edge. Cut 8 and rotate 4 so flowers gave each other on the interior edge

#5 BLOCK 3:  PURPLE
These blocks will use pattern matching to "seamlessly" join the dolphin body across two blocks. I used a different dolphin in my pattern matching tutorial than for the finished blocks. Both are adorable and work equally well. Check out the tutorial on how to do pattern matching for English Paper Piecing in this blog post.

#5 BLOCK 4: PINK

 #5 BLOCK 4:  GREEN

#5 BLOCK 4:  ORANGE
These are cut from the same line. The only difference is the angle of the template.

#5 BLOCK 4:  PURPLE

And that's it for Bundle #5. I hope you have fun learning some new skills and I'll see you next month with Bundle #6!

Happy stitching,

Melinda
