About The Cotton Patch Staff: Meet Bryn

Hello everyone,

My name is Bryn, and I will be working with Vivian on the Cotton Patch blog going forward. Following Vivian’s lead, I will give a brief introduction of my sewing journey thus far.

I cannot remember a time when sewing was not a part of my life in one way or another. My mom, who has been an avid sewist since she was young, loved smocking and often made dresses for me as a kid. While my mom was on her sewing machine making amazing garments, I was dressing my Barbies up in the fabric scraps.

Around the time that I had grasped the importance of the fabric scissors as opposed to the paper scissors, I started sewing simple things like pillows for my stuffed animals and bags to carry around my sewing things. Although I had no concept of seam allowance or proper finishing, I was enthusiastic about sewing and, most importantly, being able to play with fabric like my mom.

Apart from a couple garments and an apron I made during high school, this was the extent of my personal experience sewing until a couple of years ago. Despite not sewing during this time, I always had some creative pursuit underway—whether it was paper collage, drawing, or hand embroidery.

After moving back to the Bay Area, my mom suggested taking a quilting class together at The Cotton Patch. She had recently bought a new Bernina 770, so I could borrow her Pfaff that I had learned to sew on when I was a kid or her old Bernina 830 record. I took her up on her offer, tried out both machines, and fell in love with the Bernina my mom had been given for her 13th birthday in 1977. We took the Star Baby class together, and I caught the quilting bug.

Since then, it has been a whirlwind of fabric, thread, and batting. I have officially adopted my mom’s 830 Record and bought a secondhand sewing table with a lift system so I can quilt level with the tabletop.

With each new quilt project I undertake, I am excited to learn a new skill or technique. Most recently, I have been working to improve my free-motion skills.

In June, I officially joined the Cotton Patch team and am excited to continue growing as a quilter and sewist! Looking forward to seeing you on the next blog post!
